William Wherry states. I am a turnkey in this Gaol. On Friday morning last, I was on duty in the corridor. Turnkey Ryan called me to Brown's cell and asked me to come and listen to what he was saying. Brown was not saying anything then, and Ryan went into the cell and asked him to repeat what he had said. Brown said he had said nothing. Ryan then got very excited and struck him several times. I heard Ryan say nothing except "Stand up, you cur!" Brown was sitting down when the first blow was struck. I did not interfere except by putting my hand on Ryan's arm to induce him to desist. Acting Warden Jones came almost immediately.

John Jones states. I am Acting Warden in this Gaol. On Friday morning last, I was in the compound. I heard cries in the Gaol and a great noise. I went to see what it was and found Turnkey Ryan in Brown's cell.
